THE HISTORY OF SANTA EULÀRIA - THE SAINT

According to the tradition, Saint Eulalia (Eulalia in Spanish and Eulària in Catalan) was born in Sarrià (Barcelona), and it is also the place where she lived. She was a girl distinguished for her charity work. Poor people knocked constantly at her house door and they never went without a penny. Near the Saint’s house was a well, where nearby neighbours went to collect water. One day the girl went to collect some water and she saw that the well was dry. Frightened that this fact could mean a misfortune for everyone, on the way home she mourned desperately. The tears she left on the path, started to form a river of fresh water that accompanied her home. The water flowed with such force that could fill all the wells in Barcelona.

A large forest full of cypress was near Saint Eulalia’s house. One day the Saint walked through there and an angel appeared predicting that she would be the patron saint of Barcelona. At the beginning of the IV century (284 - 305) Diocletian, the roman emperor, ordered the relentlessly persecution of Christians. Saint Eulalia was only 13 years old, but she appeared in front of Deciano, the consul, to tell him that she was a Christian, and to rebuke him hardly the violent way he was treating the Christians. Deciano locked her up in prison and condemned her to suffer thirteen tortures, as thirteen years old she was. Finally, she had been nailed to a cross in the Angel square of Barcelona.

In 1.235, the transit from Islamic to Christian influence took place in Ibiza. Ibiza and Formentera become part of the Crown of Catalonia and Aragons. When the new catalan inhabitants, headed by Guillem de Montgrí, arrived to our islands, they began to name all the towns. They felt great devotion to Saint Eulalia. When they saw the river in this town, they remembered the history of the Saint. First they named the town “Quartó del Rei” (The Kings Fourth), but later they changed the name to Santa Eulària des Riu. (Saint Eulalia of the river).

Saint Eulalia has been the patroness of Barcelona untill 1.687. She still is the patroness of the cathedral in Barcelona. In fact, the cathedral is dedicated to the Saint and her remains can be found in the crypt of the cathedral, under the high altar.

Ibiza is dance, party, exhibition, music that is on day and night. Eivissa is quietness, the earth, the essence, first light, a walk under the moon, or a delicious dinner next to the sea. The pavement cafés, all kind of different people, art galleries, hippy markets, all kind of entertaiments, discos, they all offer amusement for all class of tastes, Ibiza offers you a multicultural spirit.

In the more inland areas of Ibiza, there are many hidden spots of great charm; small country villages, almond groves, olive trees, and carob trees enclosed by ancient stone walls, along with many fine examples of the island's particular architecture. A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY: Spanish Origin.

Spanish is a language derived from Latin. When the Roman Empire fell, the Latin started fragmenting to the Romance languages, the languages that derived from Latin.

Spanish was the language spoken in the area of the castles in High Ebro (Castilla la Vieja). Spanish is the result of the linguistic integration of speakers from different backgrounds (people from: Cantabria, La Rioja, País Vasco, mozarabics…)

The Castilian County acquires the status of Kingdom in 1035 with Fernando I. The Castilian kings continue with the Reconquest (Reconquista) and Spanish was moving in mainland.

New literary genres appear, to reflect courtly and chivalric ideals, from feudal aristocracy and other social groups. The first words written in Spanish were sermon notes. Then literary works started to be written in Spanish, and so Spanish began to be a culture language. First important literary texts like “El libro del Buen Amor” Arcipreste de Hita or “La Celestina” Fernando de Rojas.

Cristóbal Colon introduces Spanish in South America when he get there for the conquest in 1492. In the same year, Antonio de Nebrija writes the first book for Spanish Grammatik “Gramática Castellana”.

Mid thirteenth century, Alfonso X El Sabio (sage), was responsible for setting the rules for Spanish grammar. He also founded and directed la Escuela de Traductores de Toledo (Toledo school of translators) where treaties and texts in other languages were translated in Spanish.

XVI century was the Gold century of Spanish language. In this period, a lot of classical authors wrote: Garcilaso de la Vega, Fray Luis de León, Juan de Valdés and Cervantes (one of the most important writers in Spanish)

In 1713 the Real Academia Española, was created to preserve the purity of the language and give Spanish definitive and concrete rules to use it.

In the present, since the constitution of 1978, Spain has got multilingual character, because there are other languages spoken in different places of Spain apart of Spanish: Gallego, Catalán and Vasco. The two first from Latin, but the last one whose origin is unkown.
