According to the tradition, Saint Eulalia (Eulalia in Spanish and Eulària in Catalan) was born in Sarrià (Barcelona), and it is also the place where she lived. She was a girl distinguished for her charity work. Poor people knocked constantly at her house door and they never went without a penny. Near the Saint’s ho
use was a well, where nearby neighbours went to collect water. One day the girl went to collect some water and she saw that the well was dry. Frightened that this fact could mean a misfortune for everyone, on the way home she mourned desperately. The tears she left on the path, started to form a river of fresh water that accompanied her home. The water flowed with such force that could fill all the wells in Barcelona.
A large forest full of cypress was near Saint Eulalia’s house. One day the Saint walked through there and an angel appeared predicting that she would be the patron saint of Barcelona. At the beginning of the IV century (284 - 305) Diocletian, the roman emperor, ordered the relentlessly persecution of Christians. Saint Eulalia was only 13 years old, but she appeared in front of Deciano, the consul, to tell him that she was a Christian, and to rebuke him hardly the violent way he was treating the Christians. Deciano locked her up in prison and condemned her to suffer thirteen tortures, as thirteen years old she was. Finally, she had been nailed to a cross in the Angel square of Barcelona.
In 1.235, the transit from Islamic to Christian influence took place in Ibiza. Ibiza and Formentera become part of the Crown of Catalonia and Aragons. When the new catalan inhabitants, headed by Guillem de Montgrí, arrived to our islands, they began to name all the towns. They felt great devotion to Saint Eulalia. When they saw the river in this town, they remembered the history of the Saint. First they named the town “Quartó del Rei” (The Kings Fourth), but later they changed the name to Santa Eulària des Riu. (Saint Eulalia of the river).
Saint Eulalia has been the patroness of Barcelona untill 1.687. She still is the patroness of the cathedral in Barcelona. In fact, the cathedral is dedicated to the Saint and her remains can be found in the crypt of the cathedral, under the high altar.
